The Snake tucked up in the Horse’s hoof and remained there as the Horse crossed the river during the Jade Emperor’s great race to decide the animals of the zodiac. The Snake emerged from the Horse’s hoof just as they were about to cross the finish line, frightened the Horse nearly to death, and snatched sixth place. As a result, the Snake was designated as the sixth animal of the zodiac. It’s also why when horses see snakes; they tend to step on them.
